Photos - Oct 1999Deerfield is an old frontier town. Founded back in 1639, it lies in Massachussets near the Canadian border. It is now a museum town, after a rich yank bought up all the old houses and restored them. Colourful stories of Mohawk Indian raids and Canadian raids were told by the guides - the Canadians would take all the villagers prisoner, then the Indians would burn down the houses.
We went there with Jo, because the area was described in the book "Ghost". We also went to Sturbridge Falls, and Concord where the first English soldier was shot during the War of Independence. I guess we should have peeed against the statue as an act of rebellion...
Mum was also keen to see the 'Fall' colours: New England is famous for the colours that the leaves change. In particular Maples leaves go an almost fluorescent red/orange, and a Blazing bush turns from green to a rich Crimson. Mum got to see the start of the change and will have to wait until the next web update to see them in their full glory!
We also went to Sturbridge. This old town is next to Deerfield and is where Sarah ferguson (of ghost, not toe-sucking fame) used to sit and write her ficticious diaries.
